![]() ![]() ![]() I had read deeper into why TeamViewer dropped XP support, and apparently it's got to do with a security vulnerability where a remote user can gain system level access from a regular user account, which is like a really bad thing in regards of remote desktop software. Personally I don't have a big $$$ machine, but having dealt with such dedicated systems before and having seen very recent posts regarding this being a current problem from some big businesses too, then the XP/remote desktop issue affects a wider range of users than people might initially think and I wanted to open the thread for all relevant discussion, options and workarounds. Thanks for the advice! I saw the 'mirror driver' options, but thought the only reason I'd need to bother with that is if I need to control it from the login screen, but if it makes a difference on the speed too, I'll definitely be trying that! Probably not tonight, but I'll definitely check it out more when I get time. You may need to reinstall VNC and/or the mirror driver (and enable it). You should test it on a computer you don't care about before installing it in you production machine. Buy a used one on eBay (likely what you need hasn't been manufactured in years). If that doesn't make VNC fast, you need to install a different graphics card. All versions (AFAIK) need to have it enabled manually: on the VNC server (your $100,000 machine) right click the systray icon and click Properities. On older versions, you need to run the mirror driver installer separately. VNC is slow if you don't have the mirror driver installed and enabled on a supported GPU. All the apps I create work just fine on any NT system and it's trivial if a customer needs one to work on 9x (my company uses primarily Lazarus and assembler). They make it seem like compiling for XP is just so hard. It's shameful Teamviewer isn't supported on XP anymore. I've already posted a link to UltraVNC on the software page, it would be handy to have some insight from people familiar with other alternatives though. I'd still like to leave this post open to discussion on any and all useful ways to remote desktop with Windows XP, including other software alternatives and possible complications and workarounds, and in particular what's the latest versions that still run on XP. Still sucks that apparently there's no hope for TeamViewer on XP anymore, especially since VNC is fucking slow, but at least there are still options, if not a headache to get set up sometimes. The final settings that I needed to change to get past this issue was in UltraVNC server settings, under the Connections tab, I had to enable 'Display Query Window', which allows me to set the default action to 'Accept' underneath that. I kept running into rejected connection issues despite disabling basically all firewalls and security settings between the two. Figuring out settings to make a happy connection between the two vastly different systems proved way more difficult than I had initially expected, especially since I know VNC can run on a potato PSP1000. There are people unable to connect to their +/- $100,000 dedicated manufacturing systems due to this, and their controller systems don't lend themselves to just updating Windows as a solution.Īre there any ways to get TeamViewer working on XP today? Or other alternative remote control software that's XP compatible?Įdit Since I'm not seeing any hope for TeamViewer, I've proceeded on to UltraVNC for my Windows XP system (server side), and am using Remmina + VNC plugin on Linux Mint (viewer side). Versions 12, 13, and 14 all refuse to connect now, saying the XP side is outdated and needs to be updated. ![]() ![]() They have only dropped support for free users. Important Edit: I've been informed that TeamViewer 14.2 does still work on Windows XP, only if you have a paid license though. ![]()
